Dane County, Madison, WI, Residents - Heed Storm Warnings!

Did you know?

According to the National Weather Service, Southern Wisconsin averages 40 days of thunderstorms per year, with 5 to 10 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings per county per year.

With so many storms in Southern Wisconsin, it’s important for Dane County, Madison, residents to be on the alert for storm warnings.

Warning – Take Action! A Severe Thunderstorm Warning means that severe weather is imminent in your area or already occurring. A Thunderstorm Warning means current storm conditions can turn worse, including heavy rains and strong winds.

Watch – Be Prepared! A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means that thunderstorms are possible, so stay tuned.

It can be hard to predict dangerous storms, but the National Weather Advisory has developed signs to help keep us prepared and stay safe. Fortunately, the National Weather Service will issue the following flood warnings, and understanding them could make the difference to keep your family and property safe.

  1. Flash Flood Warning:  Issued when flooding is imminent or already occurring. If you see or hear this warning, move to higher ground because this type of flood can be sudden and violent. It is hard to predict how long it will last and could take minutes to hours to develop, and it can happen even in areas that are not immediately receiving water. Please review the following description of the four flood warnings:
  2. Flood Warning: This kind of warning is issued when flooding is either occurring or is imminent. You need to take action and find a safe place for you and your family.
  3. Flood Watch: This warning is issued when the conditions are favorable for a specific hazardous weather event and for flooding to occur in the area. It is a preventative warning because it means that flooding could occur.
  4. Flood Advisory: This type of advisory is issued when flooding is not expected, but the possibility is severe enough to issue an advisory. People should take caution because the situation could change.
