It is important to prepare before a water, storm, flood, or fire disaster occurs; one way to do that is by building a basic emergency kit.
Preparing an emergency kit is an important step to protect you, and your household should unforeseen events occur. An emergency kit is essential for short-term survival that provides essential items. It’s recommended to keep your kit in a convenient place for ease of accessibility.
The following items are recommended for your Emergency kit:
- Water, one gallon per person per day
- Food, non-perishable 3-day supply
- Manual can opener
- Battery-operated radio, preferably an NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries.
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- First aid kit
- Whistle to signal for help
- Clothing
- Dust masks or bandanas
- Plastic sheeting, garbage bags, and duct tape
- Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities, if necessary
- Cash
- Important documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification, and bank account information
- local maps
- Hygiene items
- Fire extinguisher
- Matches in a waterproof container
Fire, water, and storm emergencies can happen anytime to anyone.
