Tips for Avoiding Fire Damage Caused by a Dryer Fire

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) research reveals that “One-third (32 percent) of dryer fires were caused by a failure to clean. This appears to be mainly lint build-up, as 27 percent of dryer fires started when dust, fiber, or lint ignited. Mechanical failures or malfunctions caused 27% of dryer fires; 16% were caused by electrical failures or malfunctions.”

Safety considerations for cooking with oil

Dry ice blasting uses compressed air to accelerate solid carbon dioxide (CO₂) dry ice pellets to clean a variety of surfaces including those from fire damage. Dry ice cleaning is a "green" process that uses small pellets of recycled carbon dioxide to clean a surface. The type of residues on a material may also determine the cleaning method. Oil or grease-based residues will require a dry solvent cleaning agent.

Pre-cleaning and preconditioning refer to the cleaning steps use before the selected cleaning process. Pre-cleaning removes excessive residues and soils so that the wet or dry cleaning process will be more effective at restoring the surface or material.

Following are some dry cleaning processes used for pre-cleaning.

• HEPA-Vacuuming is a cleaning process using a vacuum device to remove light debris and particulate soiling.
• Compressed air is a mildly aggressive means of agitation, depending on the psi (pounds per square inch) of air pressure. The force of pressurized air removes loose particulate residues.
• Brushing provides agitation ranging from mild to very aggressive.

Unfortunately, if you do not practice safe cooking habits, your happy holiday could quickly become hazardous in a blink of an eye. According to the NFPA, cooking is the primary cause of home fires and injuries, with the Thanksgiving holiday being the peak day for cooking-related fire emergencies. Review the following safety tips to help ensure you can enjoy a safe holiday.

• Never leave cooking food unattended—stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling food. 
• Check food regularly while cooking and remain in the home while kitchen equipment is in use. Use a timer as a reminder that the stove or oven is on.
• Keep small children away from the cooking area. Enforce a "kid-free zone" and make them stay at least three feet away from the stove and oven.

In this before picture is a type of fire damage called a puffback that occurred in Barneveld, WI.  A puffback is a messy furnace malfunction that occurs when an oil burner backfires, sending soot throughout your home or business. It can happen all at once, covering an interior in a grimy film or a puffback can leak soot particles more gradually.

The aftermath of a puffback is usually the main problem. Walls, ceilings, carpets, furniture and curtains are coated with a fine film of soot and smoky streaks that look like spider webs, known as “soot webs” in the restoration industry. As a rule, the damage is worse with a forced-air heating system or central air-conditioning, because the duct work provides a path through the house, even into closets.

A protein fire is smoke damage resulting from the extreme burn of a protein enriched fibre. Most common protein fires are from burnt food. SERVPRO of Dane County West used Dry Ice Blasting to clean up the soot damage from a fire in Monroe, WI. Dry ice blasting uses compressed air to accelerate solid carbon dioxide (CO₂) dry ice pellets to clean a variety of surfaces including those from fire damage. 

Dry ice cleaning is a "green" process that uses small pellets of recycled carbon dioxide to clean a surface. The pellets sublimate (turn from solid directly to gas) during the cleaning process. That rapid change in state from solid to gas causes microscopic shock waves which assist in removing the contaminant. Dry ice blasting is nonabrasive, nonconductive and nonflammable. Dry ice blasting generates no additional waste or secondary contamination unlike media and water blasting.

Dry ice blasting does not contribute to greenhouse gasses and no hazardous wastes are produced. The carbon dioxide gas is absorbed by trees and plants and converted into carbon (plant growth) and oxygen. With basic safety precautions, the work process is safe. Pretty lights, candles, and decorations are just a few of the items bringing charm and cheer to the holiday seasons—however, if they are not used carefully your holidays may go from festive to frightening.

The American Red Cross says, “Stay safe while you celebrate.”

The American Red Cross offers the following safety tips to help greatly reduce the fire risk in your home or business this holiday season.

• Place Christmas trees, candles, and other holiday decorations at least three feet away from heat sources like ?replaces, portable heaters, radiators, and heat vents.
• Make sure that light strings and other holiday decorations are in good condition. Do not use anything with frayed electrical cords and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Always unplug tree and holiday lights before leaving the property or going to bed.
• Never use lit candles to decorate a tree. Always extinguish candles before leaving the room or going to bed.

The National Safety Council says, “Watch Out for Those Fire-starters.”

The National Fire Protection Association reports 12% of home candle fires occur in December. A higher risk of fire during the holiday season comes with fireplace and candle usage. The National Safety Council and The National Fire Protection Association offers the following tips:

• Never leave burning candles unattended or sleep in a room with a lit candle
• Keep candles out of reach of children
• Make sure candles are on stable surfaces
• Don't burn candles near trees, curtains or any other flammable items
• Don't burn trees, wreaths or wrapping paper in the fireplace
• Check and clean the chimney and fireplace area at least once a year

Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires. The leading cause? Unattended cooking. It's important to be alert to prevent cooking fires.

Families gather in November for Thanksgiving and spend time preparing a delicious feast, but it you don't practice safe cooking habits, your holiday could become hazardous very quickly. According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve. The leading cause? Unattended cooking. 

It's important to be alert to prevent cooking fires.

• Be on alert! 
• Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food.
• If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
• Keep anything that catch fire away from the stove top - such as oven mitts, towels, curtains, wooden utensils, food packaging, etc.

If you have a cooking fire, consider the following safety protocols to help keep you and your family safe. 

• Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
• Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave.
• For an oven fire, keep the door closed and turn off the heat.
• Keep a lid nearby when your cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stove-top. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.

Five Dangers of Deep Frying a Turkey

A deep-fried is turkey delicious, but worth it? if you've seen any of the numerous videos of turkey fryer explosions and fires online, you may have asked yourself this question before. Running the risk of bodily injury or property damage is something to consider when menu planning this holiday season. 

• Turkey fryers can easily tip over, spilling hot cooking oil over a large area.
• An overfilled cooking pot will cause cooking oil to spill when the turkey is put in, and a partially frozen turkey will cause cooking oil to splatter when put in the pot. 
• Even a small amount of cooking oil spilling on a hot burner can cause a large fire.
• Without thermostat controls, deep fryers can overheat oil to the point of starting a fire.
• The sides of the cooking pot, lid, and pot handles can get dangerously hot.
