Smoke odor from the various types of fire damage, such as cooking mishaps, smoking, furnace puff backs, or electrical malfunctions, creates a smoke residue that can be impossible to remove without professional-grade equipment and specialized cleaning supplies. As an IICRC Certified firm, SERVPRO of Dane County West has the training and specialized equipment and products to restore all types of fire damage.

Depending on the smoke odor and the type of smoke damage, such as protein residue, dry smoke, fuel/oil residue, and wet smoke, there are different ways to clean and eliminate the smoke damage and smoke odor.

The following professional-grade products, listed below, are commonly used by SERVPRO of Dane County West to mitigate fire damage:

  • Hydroxyl Generators - Hydroxyls work primarily by abstracting hydrogen atoms, thereby dismantling the molecular structure of odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Powerful hydroxyl generators using the same broad range of UV radiation as the sun are now used to naturally clean and deodorize indoor environments.
  • Ozone Machine - Used to oxidize organic odors such as smoke, pet odors, mildew, organic pollutants, and more without chemicals.
  • Air Scrubbers and Negative Air Machines - Air Scrubbers are used for cleaning and controlling air quality and creating negative pressure in a work area. How It Works: Air enters the unit and passes through a three-stage filtration process that captures smoke, fumes, mold spores, dust, and odor-causing particulates. O
  • Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that easily penetrates sites where odor-causing residues accumulate.
  • Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based products in large volume, dense fogs suitable for confined areas. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that pair with and neutralize odor-causing particles.
  • Ultra Sonic Cleaning Machines - Ultrasonic sound waves produce millions of microscopic bubbles that form and collapse, creating a gentle implosion and vacuum called cavitation to clean and restore items.
  • Dry Soot Chemical Sponge - A natural rubber sponge designed to remove soot from fires in a dry state. The porous cells of the sponge lift soot from surfaces quickly without smearing.
  • Dry Ice Blasting - Dry ice cleaning is a "green" process that uses small pellets of recycled carbon dioxide to clean a surface. The pellets sublimate (turn from solid directly to gas) during the cleaning process. That rapid change in state from solid to gas causes microscopic shock waves that assist in removing contaminants. Dry ice blasting for fire damage restoration is non-abrasive, non-conductive, and nonflammable. Dry ice blasting generates no additional waste or secondary contamination like media and water blasting can.
  • Professional Grade Smoke Cleaning/Deodorizer Products –SERVPRO Industries, LLC has a chemical division dedicated to developing products specifically designed to clean fire-damaged contents. From floors to ceilings, SERVPRO has a cleaning product for that.

a group of people gathered around a table for thanksgiving dinner Have Questions About Fire, Smoke, or Soot Damage? Call SERVPRO of Dane County West Today – (608) 497-3331

Each November, families gather to celebrate Thanksgiving by preparing a delicious feast. Unfortunately, if you do not practice safe cooking habits, your happy holiday could quickly become hazardous in a blink of an eye.

According to the NFPA, cooking is the primary cause of home fires and injuries, with the Thanksgiving holiday being the peak day for cooking-related fire emergencies.

Review the following safety tips to help ensure you can enjoy a safe holiday.

  1. Never leave cooking food unattended—stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling food.
  2. Check food regularly while cooking and remain in the home while kitchen equipment is in use. Use a timer as a reminder that the stove or oven is on.
  3. Keep small children away from the cooking area. Enforce a "kid-free zone" and make them stay at least three feet away from the stove and oven.
  4. Keep anything flammable like potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels away from the stove, oven, or other appliances in the kitchen that generates heat.
  5. Do not wear loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.
  6. Clean cooking surfaces frequently to prevent grease build-up.
  7. Purchase a fire extinguisher to keep in the kitchen year-round. Contact the local fire department for training on the proper use of fire extinguishers if you are unsure.
  8. Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving home to make sure all kitchen appliances like stoves, ovens, and toasters are turned off.
  9. Install a smoke alarm near the kitchen and on each level of the home. Especially near sleeping areas, and inside and outside of bedrooms. Use the test button to check it is working correctly every month. Replace the batteries at least once a year.

If the unthinkable happens and fire strikes your business or home, give the experts at SERVPRO of Dane County West a call. We will help make it "Like it never even happened."

Are those Spider Webs or Soot Webs?

10/30/2023 (Permalink)

soot webs on the ceiling from fire damage When fire and water take control of your life, we help you take it back. Our goal is to make it…”Like it never even happened.” #608-497-3331

Believe it or not, those are not spider webs but soot webs from fire damage. Soot webs, also known as "soot tags" and "smoke cobwebs," are strings of carbon released from a fire. As the heat circulates into colder spaces, soot particles follow in chain-like formations and create these webbed structures. Soot webs are completely new formations created by soot from a fire, not neglected dust or spider webs.

A fire can leave behind soot, smoke odor damage, and other problems. As fire restoration and remediation specialists, SERVPRO® of Dane County West professionals are used to seeing the unique and often spooky appearance of soot tags. Smoke and soot can be toxic, creating a hazardous situation for your property.

Our professionals are highly-trained, with the experience, tools, and knowledge to clean up fire damage and remove the smell of smoke.

9 Grilling Safety Tips

a grill with flames and a title "Grill Safely" Have Questions About Fire, Smoke, Soot, or Water Damage? Call SERVPRO of Dane County West Today – (608) 497-3331

It's barbecue season! Before you fire up the grill and enjoy some tasty treats, let's talk about grilling safety. Here are some essential tips to ensure a sizzling and safe grilling experience:

  1. Location Matters: Set up your grill in an open, well-ventilated area, away from structures, trees, and combustible materials. Keep a safe distance to prevent fire hazards.
  2. Proper Maintenance: Regularly clean your grill to prevent grease buildup, which can lead to flare-ups and potential fires. Check gas connections for leaks and ensure all parts are in good working condition.
  3. Stay Attentive: Never leave your grill unattended while it's in use. A moment's distraction can lead to accidents. Keep an eye on the flames and stay focused on the task at hand.
  4. Keep a Safe Zone: Create a safe zone around the grill, free from children, pets, and foot traffic. Establish boundaries to prevent accidental contact and burns.
  5. Safe Ignition: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for lighting your grill. Avoid using excessive lighter fluid, and never add it to an already lit fire. Opt for long-handled lighters or ignition systems for added safety.
  6. Tools and Utensils: Use long-handled grilling tools to keep a safe distance from the heat. Avoid using flammable materials or loose clothing that could catch fire.
  7. Fire Extinguisher Ready: Have a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it. Water may not be effective for grease fires, so a fire extinguisher specifically designed for cooking fires is recommended.
  8. Proper Extinguishing: When you're done grilling, make sure to properly extinguish the flames. For charcoal grills, close the vents and let the coals cool completely before disposing of them in a metal container. For gas grills, turn off the burners and close the gas valve.
  9. Grill Cleaning Safety: Wait for the grill to cool down before cleaning it. Use appropriate cleaning tools and wear protective gloves to avoid burns or injuries.

Remember, safety should always be the main ingredient in your grilling adventures. By following these tips, you can enjoy delicious grilled food while keeping your loved ones and property protected. Happy grilling!

The Spring season brings warmer temperatures, beautiful colors, and an abundance of outdoor activities. Plan this season to help ensure it is safe and fire-free.

By following these steps, you can help prevent wildfires and ensure a fire-free spring.

  • Clear debris and flammable materials around your home: Remove dry leaves, twigs, and other debris from around your home and yard. Trim trees and shrubs that are near your home to reduce the risk of fire.
  • Check your smoke detectors: Ensure that your smoke detectors are in working condition and have fresh batteries. This is a crucial step to alert you in case of fire.
  • Don't burn debris: Burning yard waste is a common cause of wildfires. Avoid burning yard waste, especially on windy days, and instead dispose of it safely.
  • Be careful with outdoor fires: If you plan on having an outdoor fire, use a fire pit or designated area. Keep a water source nearby to put out the fire and don't leave it unattended.
  • Follow local fire safety regulations: Check with your local fire department for any restrictions or regulations on burning or outdoor fires.
  • Be cautious with cigarette butts: Don't toss cigarette butts out of your car window or on the ground. Ensure that they are fully extinguished before discarding them in a proper ashtray.

How Do I Remove Soot Residues from a Fire in My Dane County, WI Property?

4/17/2023 (Permalink)

fire damage aftermath #SootRemoval, #SootCleanup, #FireMitigation, #SmokeDamage, #SmokeCleanup, #FireDamageRestoration

A backdraft of emotions often sweeps over the property owner after a fire ravages your home or office. SERVPRO of Dane County West can bring Your Dane County, WI Property back to its preloss condition.

The first 48 hours after fire damage can differentiate between restoring versus replacing your property and personal belongings. As fire makes its way through a home, it consumes building materials and contents, leaving chemicals and compounds floating in the air and adhering to many surfaces.

Due to the unique behavior of smoke, fire damage restoration can be an intricate process. When smoke settles on a surface, it is soot. Not all soot is the same nor can it be cleaned the same way.

Types of Soot

Soot has three main types--dry, wet, and protein-based, the latter from cooking fires.

Dry Soot Mitigation

Dry soot is powdery and easily removable. It is typically caused by burning natural materials like wood or paper and responds well to cleaning by brushing, dry chemical sponging, vacuuming, and feather or cloth dusting.

Wet Soot Mitigation

Wet soot, on the other hand, is sticky and smears when wiped. It is typically caused by burning synthetic materials like plastics or rubber and is more difficult to clean. Wet soot can also be more damaging than dry soot, as it can penetrate deep into porous surfaces and cause discoloration or staining.

If your home or business suffers a fire, soot, or smoke damage, call (608) 497-3331 to make it “Like it never even happened.”

When SERVPRO of Dane County West works with insurance carriers on Fire Damage claims, Insurance policies distinguish between structure and contents

Like SERVPRO of Dane County West, restorers commonly separate structure and contents when scoping and estimating a fire loss. For this reason, the structure and contents are cleaned separately. In some situations, contents are moved out of the structure and cleaned at a separate location. When cleaned on-site, contents are moved to a clean area of the structure for cleaning.

What Is Structure?

Items are called structures if they are permanently attached to a building, such as the framework of a building, including walls, ceilings, floors, attached floor coverings, doors, and windows structures. Other items might be called structural components, such as cabinets, light fixtures, the heating and cooling system (HVAC), and bath fixtures. An easy way to distinguish structure from contents is to imagine turning the building upside down and shaking it; what falls out is contents and what remains is structure.

What Is Fire Restoration Cleaning?

The industry describes fire restoration as the task of restoring the building to preloss condition. Cleaning to preloss conditions means removing the effects of the fire damage. The fire residues will often give off smoke odors, so the restorer must also deodorize to rid the building of the malodors. If fire damaged some parts of the structure beyond repair, the restorer disposes of structural items that are blistered by heat or charred by flame.

The SERVPRO Fire Restoration Professional determines what items can be restored and what items must be replaced.  The SERVPRO Fire Restoration Professional will identify for the customer and insurance company any conditions that likely existed before the fire occurred since fire restoration cleaning does not mean cleaning structure to a better condition than it was before the fire. Preexisting damages or conditions do not need to be addressed as part of fire restoration, are recognized and documented.

SERVPRO Fire Restoration Professionals perform various tests to determine the appropriate cleaning method for fire-damaged structures.

One goal of testing is to categorize materials as washable or non-washable:

  • Washable: Materials that can be wet cleaned with the many SERVPRO branded cleaning products developed for fire-damaged items.
  • Non-washable: Materials that cannot be wet cleaned. The Dry Cleaning Sponge/Chem Sponge is used to clean smoke residues from surfaces. Chem Sponges are rubber sponges that contain no chemical products but clean through friction and absorption. Dry Cleaning Sponges can usually remove light-to-medium soils and residues that are non-greasy.

The type of residues on a material may also determine the cleaning method. Oil or grease-based residues will require a dry solvent cleaning agent.

Pre-cleaning and preconditioning refer to the cleaning steps use before the selected cleaning process. Pre-cleaning removes excessive residues and soils so that the wet or dry cleaning process will be more effective at restoring the surface or material.

Following are some dry cleaning processes used for pre-cleaning.

  • HEPA-Vacuuming is a cleaning process using a vacuum device to remove light debris and particulate soiling.
  • Compressed air is a mildly aggressive means of agitation, depending on the psi (pounds per square inch) of air pressure. The force of pressurized air removes loose particulate residues.
  • Brushing provides agitation ranging from mild to very aggressive.

The Behavior of Smoke and Soot Residue Near You

2/22/2022 (Permalink)

smoke floating against black background with title The Behavior of Smoke Water Damage, Fire Damage, Soot, or Smoke Damage? Call SERVPRO of Dane County West - #608-497-3331.

Due to the unique behavior of smoke, fire damage restoration can be an intricate process. When smoke settles on a surface, it is soot. There are two different types of smoke—wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Not all soot is the same nor can it be cleaned the same way.

SERVPRO of Dane County West professionals in the Madison, WI area are thoroughly trained and IICRC Certified in fire cleanup and restoration and know the different types of smoke and their behavior patterns. Knowing this information is vital to proper fire damage restoration and smoke odor elimination. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO professionals will survey the loss to determine the extent of impact from fire, smoke, heat, and moisture on the building materials and their contents. The soot will then be tested to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. Pretesting determines the proper cleaning method and allows SERVPRO of Dane County West professionals to focus on saving your precious items.

Their knowledge of building systems helps them investigate how far smoke damage may have spread. The following points are additional facts you may not know about smoke.

  • Hot smoke migrates to colder areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may significantly affect the restoration process.

 TYPES OF SMOKE

  • Wet Smoke. (Plastic and Rubber) Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, and smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
  • Dry Smoke. (Paper and Wood) Fast-burning, high temperatures; heat rises, therefore smoke rises.
  • Protein Fire Residue. (Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire) Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
  • Fuel Oil Soot. (Furnace puff backs) While “puff backs” can create havoc for homeowners, SERVPRO of Dane County West professionals can, in most cases, restore the contents and structure quickly.
  • Other Types. (Tear gas, fingerprint powder, and fire extinguisher residue) Special loss situations require special care.

SERVPRO of Dane County West professionals are trained to handle even the toughest of losses. If your home or business suffers a fire, soot, or smoke damage, call (608) 497-3331 to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Tips for Avoiding Fire Damage Caused by a Dryer Fire

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) research reveals that “One-third (32 percent) of dryer fires were caused by a failure to clean. This appears to be mainly lint build-up, as 27 percent of dryer fires started when dust, fiber, or lint ignited. Mechanical failures or malfunctions caused 27% of dryer fires; 16% were caused by electrical failures or malfunctions.”

A dryer fire can cause significant fire damage in Madison, WI, homes - tips to help homeowners proactively prevent a fire from breaking out in the laundry room.

  1. Clean the lint out of the dryer’s lint filter after every load.

Lint accumulation causes over one-fourth of dryer fires. Clean the lint filter after each load to prevent lint accumulation from igniting.

  1. When cleaning chemical stains, use caution.

Fabric with oil, gas, or cleaning chemicals stains are flammable substances that should be regarded as a potential fire hazard. Consumer Reports writes, “The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends washing such stained clothing more than once to minimize volatile chemicals, then hanging to dry. If you must use a dryer, use the lowest heat setting and a drying cycle that concludes with a cool-down period. In the event that a fire does start, keep the dryer door closed to limit its oxygen supply—a fire needs oxygen to keep it going.”

  1. Perform an annual cleaning and inspection of the dryer and dryer duct.

To avoid blockages in the vent or duct, it’s important to clean and inspect the dryer at least once a year. By cleaning and inspecting the dryer at least once a year, the homeowner can identify and resolve any problems before they lead to a damaged appliance or a fire.

It’s important to disconnect the dryer from its power source, and to cut off the gas valve that supplies the dryer before cleaning and inspecting is done.  Do not damage the gas line or stretch it too tightly if it’s a gas dryer.

Consumer Reports provides the following dryer cleaning tips: “Disconnect the duct from the dryer, and vacuum both the dryer and the duct—as much as you can access. Where possible, separate the duct into shorter sections for better access, then reassemble and attach the duct to the dryer. Be sure all joints in the duct are properly connected and held together with clamps or foil tape. Then return the dryer to its original spot and reconnect the power. While you’re at it, clean behind the dryer and underneath it—lint builds up there, too. In winter, check after windy weather or snowstorms to be sure that snow isn’t blocking the outdoor vent.”

  1. Replace plastic or foil accordion ducts with rigid metal ducts.

Accordion ducts are problematic because they are too flexible or can easily crumple, leading to problems such as restricted airflow and lint buildup. A rigid metal duct is a safer choice.

  1. Avoid using sheet metal screws to connect duct sections.

Sheet metal screws can collect lint, which leads to lint buildup within the duct. Instead, attach duct sections with duct connectors and metal clamps or dryer vent foil tape.

  1. Prequalify a reputable damage restoration company before a dryer fire occurs.

You have so much invested in your property; trust professionals to protect your most valuable asset! Thanksgiving is a Peak Day for Fire Damage Emergencies

Each November, families gather to celebrate Thanksgiving in the Dane County, Madison, WI area by preparing a delicious feast.

Review the following safety tips to help ensure you can enjoy a safe holiday:

  • Never leave cooking food unattended—stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling food.
  • Check food regularly while cooking and remain in the home while kitchen equipment is in use. Use a timer as a reminder that the stove or oven is on.
  • Keep small children away from the cooking area. Enforce a "kid-free zone" and make them stay at least three feet away from the stove and oven.
  • Keep anything flammable like potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels away from the stove, oven, or other appliances in the kitchen that generates heat.
  • Do not wear loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.
  • Clean cooking surfaces frequently to prevent grease build-up.
  • Purchase a fire extinguisher to keep in the kitchen year-round. Contact the local fire department for training on the proper use of fire extinguishers if you are unsure.
  • Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving home to make sure all kitchen appliances like stoves, ovens, and toasters are turned off.
  • Install a smoke alarm near the kitchen and on each level of the home.

Dangers of Deep Frying a Turkey Near You

11/17/2021 (Permalink)

a turkey deep fryer on fire with chairs melting and also on fire around it Have Fire Damage, Smoke Damage, or Soot Damage? Call SERVPRO of Dane County West Today (608) 497-3331

Five Dangers of Deep Frying a Turkey

  1. Turkey Fryers can easily tip over, spilling hot cooking oil over a large area.
  2. An overfilled cooking pot will cause cooking oil to spill when the turkey is submerged, and a partially frozen turkey will cause cooking oil to splatter when put in the frying pot.
  3. Even a small amount of cooking oil spilling on a hot burner can ignite a fire.
  4. Without thermostat controls, deep fryers can overheat oil to the point of starting a fire.
  5. The sides of the cooking pot, lid, and pot handles can get dangerously hot.

In the Dane County, WI, area, there are more cooking fires on Thanksgiving and Christmas than any other day of the year. More than a third of the fires start in a garage or patio. Each year, fire departments respond to more than 1,000 fires related to deep fryers. Those fires cause serious burn injuries and more than $15 million in property damage.*

The deep-fried turkey is a delicious way to cook a turkey. However, it can be risky—numerous hazards come with cooking a turkey in a deep fryer. However, if you choose to deep fry your turkey this Thanksgiving, there are a few precautions you can take to protect yourself:

Turkey Frying Safety Tips

  1. Isolate the fryer.
  • Fryers should always be used outdoors, on a level surface at a safe distance from buildings and flammable materials.
  • Never leave the fryer unattended.
  • Keep all-purpose fire extinguishers nearby.
  • Never let children or pets near the fryer when used or after use as the oil can remain hot for hours.
  1. Plan Ahead: Make sure the turkey is completely thawed before deep frying. A frozen or partially thawed turkey could explode or splatter, launching oil on those near the deep fryer.
  2. Wear protective clothing. Wear flame-retardant clothing, well-insulated potholders, oven mitts or gloves, and eye protection to protect from splatter.
  3. Use proper equipment. Make sure your equipment is functioning appropriately.

Did you know that cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries in the Dane County, WI area?

The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking according to NFPA.

Safety tips to prevent home cooking fires.

  • Never leave the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food.
  • Fires start when the heat is too high, if you see signs of smoke or boiling grease, turn off the burner
  • Keep all combustible material such as oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains away from you stovetop.

Safety considerations for cooking with oil

  • Keep an eye on what you fry. If you see wisps of smoke or the oil smells, immediately turn off the burner and/or carefully remove the pan from the burner. Smoke is a danger sign that the oil is too hot.
  • Add food gently to the pot or pan so the oil does not splatter.
  • Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If you have a fire, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time. Never throw water on the fire.
  • If the fire does not go out or you don’t feel comfortable sliding a lid over the pan, get everyone out of your home. Call the fire department from outside.

If you have a cooking fire

  • Get out of the house if you have a fire! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
  • Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave.
  • If you try to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear way out.
  • Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
  • For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

When Fire Damage Takes Control of your Life in Dane County, Madison, WI, We Help you Take it Back

The first 48 hours after fire damage can differentiate between restoring versus replacing your property and personal belongings. SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals provides timely response with mitigation services ranging from fire, smoke, and soot removal to contents claims inventory and document restoration. These services help ensure your property, belongings, and memories are restored to the preloss condition when possible.

Fires bring various types of smoke damage that require specialized products and training to mitigate the soot residue cleanup.

The different types of smoke damage include:

  • Wet Smoke Damage. (Plastic and Rubber) Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, and smeary often accompanied with smoke webs.
  • Dry Smoke Damage. (Paper and Wood) Fast-burning, high temperatures; heat rises, therefore smoke rises.
  • Protein Fire Residue. (Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire) Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor. The most common protein fires are from burnt food.
  • Fuel Oil Soot Damage.

Pretesting determines the proper cleaning method and allows SERVPRO of Dane County West professionals to focus on saving your precious items.

SERVPRO of Dane County West professionals knows smoke can penetrate various cavities within the structure, causing hidden damage and odor. As an IICRC Certified firm, SERVPRO of Dane County West has the training and specialized equipment and products to restore all types of fire damage.

Take Precautions in Madison, WI, to Prevent Fire Damage

As temperatures drop in the Madison, Wisconsin area, take precautions so you can prevent serious problems such as smoke and fire damage.

Here are four tips that will help you feel safer when you need to turn up the heat.

  1. Check Your Space Heater

Small space heaters are typically used when the main heating system is inadequate. They can also boost the temperature of rooms used by individuals who are sensitive to cold.

Safety is a top consideration when using space heaters. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that more than 25,000 residential fires every year are associated with the use of space heaters.

When using a space heater, make sure there is at least three feet of clearance around it and that it’s placed on a level surface. Keep children and pets away and always unplug the heater when you are not in the room.

  1. Test All Emergency Detectors

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are typically battery operated and it’s important to check them regularly. These warning devices will alert your family to fire and dangerous smoke if working properly. It’s generally best to replace the batteries in your smoke detectors every time the clocks change—twice a year.

  1. Schedule a Fireplace Inspection

Chimney fires are mainly caused by creosote, a highly flammable residue that builds up in the flue of a fireplace. Buildup inside the chimney can easily cause a fire and lead to smoke damage. Cracks in the chimney liner could also cause carbon monoxide to spread throughout the home. Given that this is an odorless and colorless gas that can be fatal, it’s critical to make sure the fireplace is safe before you start using it. It’s important to sweep chimneys at the beginning of winter to prevent the buildup and ignition of creosote and other debris.

  1. Create a Family Plan

Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year.

If a fire occurs in your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL FOR HELP.

SERVPRO of Dane County West understands the trauma that follows a fire loss. When fire damage takes control of your life, we help you take it back. We are available 24/7 for emergency services to help you regain control quickly. We work with your insurance.

Keep Madison, Wisconsin Fire-Free this Fall

The Fall season brings cooler temperatures, beautiful colors, and an abundance of outdoor activities. Plan this season to help ensure it is safe and fire-free.

  • Fall decorations, like dried flowers and cornstalks, are highly flammable. Keep these and other decorations away from open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters.
  • Keep emergency exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes.
  • Teach children to stay away from open flames. Be sure they know how to stop, drop, and roll if their clothing catches fire.
  • Remember safety first when choosing a Halloween costume. Consider avoiding billowing fabric. If you are making your costume, choose a material that won’t easily ignite if it comes into contact with heat or a flame.
  • It is safest to use a flashlight or battery-operated candle in a jack-o-lantern. Use extreme caution if using a real candle. Place lit pumpkins away from anything that can burn and out of the way of doorsteps, walkways, and yards.

The best way to protect your family’s safety from a home fire is to teach all family members about fire prevention.

The three Ps of safety is a plan provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the US Fire Administration.

The Three Ps of Fire Prevention Are:

  •  Prepare – This step focuses on reducing the risk of fire damage situations.
  •  Practice – This step covers conducting fire drills and overall fire safety habits
  •  Prevent – This final step includes teaching your family about getting out safely

Cooler Temperatures in Madison, WI, Bring Furnace Malfunctions Like Puff Backs

A puff back is a messy furnace malfunction that occurs when an oil burner backfires, sending soot throughout your home or business. It can happen all at once, covering an interior in grimy soot, or a puff back can leak soot particles more gradually.

Puff backs can also be caused by a partly clogged or cracked nozzle, improper nozzle angle, cracked electrodes, poor adjustment of the air-fuel mixture, a defective spark transformer, shorted ignition cables, or dirty or low-grade fuel.
The aftermath of a puff back is messy. Walls, ceilings, carpets, furniture, and curtains are coated with a fine film of soot and smoky streaks. As a rule, the damage is worse with a forced-air heating system or central air-conditioning, because the ductwork provides a path through the house, even into closets.

Cleaning up the soot mess is not a job for the amateur, but rather a professional fire restoration company like SERVPRO of Dane County West.
We use special techniques and materials. For example, attempts to wash the soot off a flat-painted wall or ceiling usually leave greasy smears. At SERVPRO of Dane County, we use water-less rubber chemical sponges that work as an eraser and absorb the soot without spreading it. As an IICRC Certified Firm, we are fire damage experts with the training, specialized equipment, and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Equipped with the training, tools, and experience to quickly and efficiently clean and restore your home or business, SERVPRO of Dane County West will help make your puff back "Like it never even happened."

Using Dry Ice Blasting in Mount Horeb, WI for Fire Damage Restoration

Dry Ice Blasting is a “Green” Process used for Fire Damage Restoration near you.

Dry ice blasting uses compressed air to accelerate solid carbon dioxide (CO2) dry ice pellets to clean a variety of surfaces including those from fire damage. Dry ice cleaning is a "green" process that uses small pellets of recycled carbon dioxide to clean a surface. The pellets sublimate (turn from solid directly to gas) during the cleaning process. That rapid change in state from solid to gas causes microscopic shock waves which assist in removing the contaminant. Dry ice blasting for fire damage restoration is nonabrasive, non-conductive and nonflammable. Dry ice blasting generates no additional waste or secondary contamination unlike media and water blasting.

Dry ice blasting does not contribute to greenhouse gasses and no hazardous wastes are produced. The carbon dioxide gas is absorbed by trees and plants and converted into carbon (plant growth) and oxygen. With basic safety precautions, the work process is safe. No ozone-depleting chemicals are used and there is no exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). Dry ice blasting is really "green" recycling at its best.

A Safety Plan like the Three Ps can help Prevent Home Fires Near You.

Did you know that the US Fire Departments responded to a fire every 24 seconds in the United States? More than one-quarter (27%) reported fires occurred in homes over the past five years.*

The best way to protect your family’s safety from a home fire in Dane County, Madison, WI, is to teach all family members about fire prevention. The three Ps of safety is a plan provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the US Fire Administration.

The Three Ps of Fire Prevention Are:

  •  Prepare – This step focuses on reducing the risk of fire damage situations
  •  Practice – This step covers conducting fire drills and overall fire safety habits
  •  Prevent – This final step includes teaching your family about getting out safely

Prepare Your Home

There are several situations common to any home that could lead to fire damage,

  • overloaded electrical outlets
  • old and damaged wiring
  • old appliances
  • unattended lit candles
  • clutter near a hot stove

Prepare, Practice, and Prevent the above situations to eliminate unwanted and unexpected fire. Involve your children, and the whole will family is safer.

Practice Fire Escape Plans

Establish a fire escape plan and for your entire family, then run drills regularly. These drills should include:

  • What to do if the primary escape route is blocked. During these drills, watch out for things such as clutter in the hall.
  • Taking time to practice that if a doorknob is too hot to touch, it is unsafe to open the door.
  • Discussing the importance of remaining low to the ground so you don't inhale smoke while exiting.

Prevent Fire Injuries

This part of the family plan should include:

  • Discussions with children about not playing with matches or lighters but telling an adult about them.
  • Teaching your family the Stop, Drop, Roll technique in the event their clothing is on fire.
  • Talking about never going back into a building that's on fire.

There are many resources available for your safety practices and fire prevention habits. SERVPRO of Dane County West understands that fire and smoke damage can be devastating to property owners. We are an IICRC Certified Firm and are Here To Help® in an area near you.

Electrical Fires are among the More Common Types of Fires

7/18/2021 (Permalink)

two men in SERVPRO black uniforms inspecting a fire damaged ceiling from an electrical fire Have Questions About Fire, Smoke, or Soot Damage? Call SERVPRO of Dane County West Today – (608) 497-3331.

Types of Fire

We at SERVPRO of Dane County West deal with many types of fire damage. The main types of fires are:

  • Class A fires involve combustible materials such as wood.
  • Class B fires that involve flammable liquids.
  • Class C fires involve flammable gases.
  • Class D fires involve flammable metals.
  • Class E fires are electrical.
  • Class F fires from cooking oils and fats.

Electrical fires are among the more common types of fires we clean up and restore here at SERVPRO of Dane County West. Once the Fire Fighters have put out the fire, we are there 24/7 to restore the damage and rebuild a home or business and make it "Like it never even happened."®

What is an Electrical Fire?

An electrical fire is a malfunction or failure in electrical components that lead to a fire. These fires typically originate in cables, wires, circuit breakers, or electrical components. When the distribution of electricity is inadequate, panels, circuits, lighting equipment, and various electrical devices become overloaded and overheated, and fires can unfortunately start.

There following are common causes of electrical fires:

  • Old Appliances and Equipment - Aging appliances and equipment cause a staggering number of electrical fires.
  • Poor Maintenance – Regular electrical panel maintenance helps reduce fire risk.
  • Outdated Wiring – Homes 20 years and older often do not have the wiring capacity to handle the increased amounts of electrical usage in today’s average home.
  • Devices such as computers, video gaming systems, air conditioners, and multiple appliances with high electrical needs contribute to increased electrical usage. Also, the aging electrical wire’s deterioration can easily arc and start a fire, especially if the circuit amperage does not match with the existing wire throughout an older home.
  • Not Staying Up-to-Date with Safety Codes – With electrical usage on the rise, it’s imperative to keep us with current safety codes.
  • Light Fixtures – Installing a bulb with a wattage too high for lamps and light fixtures is a common cause of electrical fires. It’s important to check the maximum recommended bulb wattage on any lighting fixture or lamp before installing it.
  • Extension Cords – The misuse of extension cords is another common cause of electrical fires. It’s important to note that appliances should always be directly plugged into an outlet rather than an extension cord. When in doubt, hire a certified electrician to determine the appropriate type of outlets needed for your appliances.
  • Space Heaters – Since space heaters are portable, people often put them too close to items that are easily combustible such as clothing, beds, couches, rugs, chairs, carpet, etc. Please use extreme caution when using these!
  • Electrical panels and circuit breakers trip due to overload, power spikes or surges, short circuits, and ground fault. If a circuit breaker fails, it can lead to a fire. Keeping your circuit breaker up-to-date and following current codes helps to reduce the failure rate.

What Are the Typical Signs of an Electrical Fire?

  • If you smell a persistent burning smell and can’t figure out where it’s coming from, it’s often a sign of an electrical fire within the walls. If your circuit breakers keep tripping, it could mean that there is a trip to the electrical panel.
  • If you see outlets and switches that are charred and discolored, it’s often a sign of excessive heat that has caused or could lead to a fire.

Should you experience any fire, SERVPRO of Dane County West understands the trauma that follows a fire loss. When fire damage takes control of your life, we help you take it back. We are available 24/7 for emergency services to help you regain control quickly. We work with your insurance.

Review the following tips regarding smoke detector installation and maintenance.

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms. Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.

Fires from electrical damage and cooking,  unfortunately, happen. SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals understands the trauma that follows a fire loss and that your home or commercial facility contains many of your most valuable possessions. When fire damage takes control of your life, we help you take it back.

Structural Cleaning:

  • After smoke or fire damage, ceilings, walls, woodwork, carpeting, and floors will often need a thorough cleaning. SERVPRO of Dane County West will pre-test to determine the extent of damage and then use the specific equipment and cleaning products required to clean and protect the different types of surfaces found in your structure. Depending on the amount of soot, SERVPRO of Dane County West may even be able to reduce the cost of recovery by cleaning lighter soot deposits found on some surfaces, eliminating the expense incurred with repainting or refinishing. In other cases, SERVPRO of Dane County West will clean to "prepare for painting." This process deodorizes and ensures the new paint will adhere properly to the surface.

Contents Cleaning:

  • All of the restorable contents in affected areas will be professionally cleaned and deodorized. This includes area rugs, furniture, draperies, and upholstery.
  • SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals begins by carefully inspecting and testing all fabrics in the structure to determine which cleaning methods are most appropriate.
  • SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals can provide wet or dry cleaning services. Additionally, all the other restorable contents will be cleaned and deodorized to preloss condition. This includes electronics, art, wood furniture, kitchen items, clothing, bedding, bric-a-brac, and much more. A comprehensive inventory of fire-damaged items is provided upon request.

Deodorization:

  • SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals provides specialized services that rid your home or place of business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage. SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals does not merely cover lingering odors with a fragrance. They seek out the sources of odor and remove them.

When SERVPRO of Dane County West works with insurance carriers on Fire Damage claims, Insurance policies distinguish between structure and contents.

The Dry Cleaning Sponge is used to clean smoke residues from surfaces. Dry Cleaning Sponges are rubber sponges that contain no chemical products but clean through friction and absorption.

SERVPRO of Dane County West understands how distressing it is to see fire and smoke damage to your property.

We know our customers are eager to clean up and get back to everyday life. However, it is better to wait for SERVPRO of Dane County West to assess the damage before attempting fire and smoke cleanup to your Dane County, Madison, WI property. Depending on the strength and nature of the fire, your property will most likely require IICRC certified cleaning approaches listed above.

When Fire Damage Takes Control of Your Life, We Help You Take It Back

Fire damage restoration is a multi-step process that often includes water damage removal and cleanup from the firefighters who extinguished the fire to removing smoke odors, soot debris, and finally, complete property restoration. The restoration and rebuild process and time frame depends on the severity and spread of the fire and whether there is structural damage or not.

Fire damage cleanup will initially involve removing any standing water from extinguishing the fire out, mitigating the secondary water damage, and removing debris. Once the business or home is deemed safe by the appropriate officials, the fire damage restoration process of removing, replacing, or restoring soot and smoke damaged materials and eliminating smoke odor can begin.

The fire restoration process can be quite involved and emotionally overwhelming for the home or business owner. To ease the overwhelming nature of any catastrophic event, it’s important to work with an IICRC Certified restoration company with extensive training, knowledge, and years of experience like SERVPRO of Dane County West. We are Here to Help™ and will assist you in every step of the cleanup, restoration, and rebuild process.

Every fire damage event is slightly different and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the "typical" fire damage emergency.

  • Step 1: Emergency Contact. The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event to respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.
  • Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment. We carefully inspect and test your property's adjoining rooms to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.
  • Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service. Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.
  • Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present). The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to complete the drying process.
  • Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces. We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.
  • Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing. We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire conditions. We're also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.
  • Step 7: Restoration. Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet. It may entail major repairs, such as reconstructing various areas or rooms in a home or business. We have a dedicated reconstruction/rebuild team to work with you on making your house or business a home again. General Contractor License #1317784

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

10/30/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke detectors save lives. For fire damage repair and restoration call SERVPRO of Dane County West #608-497-3331

Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half.*

The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be installed in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house. Business owners should consult the local Fire Marshall to ensure specific building fire codes and smoke detector requirements are met.

Smoke alarms work best when paired with a fire escape plan. A plan allows your family, employees or clients to escape quickly and safely in an emergency situation.

  • Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year.  If an alarm "chirps," the battery is low and should be replaced right away.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

Thorough Sanitizing Brings Your Property back to its Pre-Loss Condition

There is never a convenient time for fire of water damage to strike your home or business. When you need thorough sanitizing call SERVPRO of Dane County West and we'll be there fast with the help to get your property back to its preloss condition.

We are trained to identify and eliminate offensive odors. Our technical expertise and industrial grade air scrubbers and fogging equipment go well beyond simply masking odors and other shortcuts that don’t work when your odor problem is serious or persistent.

We clean all of the restorable items and structures damaged by fire or water. We are adept at cleaning contents using a number of techniques. Our professionals are trained to provide sanitizing treatments and to remove odors and deodorize your property.

SERVPRO of Dane County West understands that using professional equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing claims loss expense. The right tool for the right job is vital to timely mitigation and restoration.

SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals have the right equipment to Sanitize your property:

Ultra Low Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid disinfectant agents, producing a fine mist that easily penetrates sites where odor-causing residues accumulate. Low pressure is applied to a high volume of air to push solution through a nozzle to create precisely sized tiny droplets.  The purpose is to create and disperse a disinfectant aerosol to reduce the numbers of airborne micro-organisms and also to apply disinfectant to surfaces that may be difficult to reach.  Ultra low volume sprayers, are lightweight, portable aerosol sprayers that allow you to disinfect areas quickly. The disinfectant hangs in the air before settling on and disinfecting the objects in the room.

Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based products in large volume creating dense fogs suitable for sanitizing confined areas.  The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that pair with and neutralize odor-causing particles. When properly created and applied, thermal fogging delivers excellent sanitation and odor control.

Thermal Fogging Devices quickly penetrate hard to reach areas with thermal fogging. Thermal fogging devices use heat to create a visible, fog-like dry mist. These fogging machines produce a large amount of fog, and are useful in a large variety of settings. The heat from the device does not affect the chemicals in the disinfecting solution, so it does not lose effectiveness. Thermal fog reaches difficult areas such as cracks in the ceiling and crevices in furniture, walls and the floor. Use thermal foggers without risking exposure to the chemicals by standing in one location and allowing the fog to spread into the room.

Ozone Generator: The portable ozone generator eliminates a variety of odors caused by animals, cigarette smoke, mold and mildew, fire, and water damage. This machine generates “ozone”, which consists of unstable oxygen molecules (containing three oxygen atoms). Ozone chemically reacts with odor-causing molecules to oxidize residues and remove the odors. When using this piece of equipment, we follow the absolute and necessary guidelines of use. Once the deodorization process is complete, ozone quickly reverts to the normal oxygen molecule, leaving no residues. Once the odor is gone, the results are permanent. One of the features of the ozone generator is that it is made to be compact and portable, yet also be a durable and professional unit.

SERVPRO Professionals utilize several methods of cleaning your contents, including:

  • Dry Cleaning - Used for cleaning light residues or to pre-clean prior to wet cleaning.
  • Wet Cleaning - An effective cleaning method for removing moderate to heavy residues.
  • Spray and Wipe -Effective for items that can’t withstand wet cleaning.
  • Foam Cleaning - Used for upholstery fabrics that might shrink or bleed if wet cleaned.
  • Abrasive Cleaning - Involves agitation of the surface being cleaned.
  • Immersion Cleaning - Contents are dipped into a bath of the cleaning product.
  • Antimicrobial and Antibacterial Treatments - Depending on the scenario, we may use antimicrobial, antibacterial, or disinfectant treatments to clean your property.

When a fire loss, like a puffback, takes control of your life, we help you take it back.

In this before picture is a type of fire damage called a puffback that occurred in Barneveld, WI.  A puffback is a messy furnace malfunction that occurs when an oil burner backfires, sending soot throughout your home or business. It can happen all at once, covering an interior in a grimy film or a puffback can leak soot particles more gradually.

The aftermath of a puffback is usually the main problem. Walls, ceilings, carpets, furniture and curtains are coated with a fine film of soot and smoky streaks that look like spider webs, known as “soot webs” in the restoration industry. As a rule, the damage is worse with a forced-air heating system or central air-conditioning, because the duct work provides a path through the house, even into closets.

Cleaning up the mess is not a job for the amateur, but rather a professional restoration company like SERVPRO of Dane County West. We use special techniques and materials. For example, attempts to wash soot off a flat-painted wall or ceiling usually leave greasy smears. At SERVPRO of Dane County, we use water-less rubber sponges and specialized vacuums that work like erasers and absorb the soot without spreading it.

What to You Can Do Until Help Arrives:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from spreading and additional damage from occurring.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs and high traffic areas and upholstery.
  • Coat chrome faucets, trim and appliances with petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Place aluminum boil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet.
  • Do not wash any walls or painted surfaces.
  • Do not shampoo carpet or upholstery.
  • Do not clean any electrical equipment.
  • Do not sent clothing to a dry cleaner since improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

Equipped with the training, tools and experience to quickly and efficiently clean and restore your home or business after a fire loss, SERVPRO of Dane County West can help prevent fire damage from creating long-term problems.  SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals provide timely response with mitigation services ranging from fire, smoke and soot removal to contents claims inventory and document restoration.  These services help ensure your property, belongings and memories are restored to preloss condition when possible.

Protein Fire Mitigation in Monroe, WI

1/25/2018 (Permalink)

Service Technicians, Brandon and Keegan, removing soot from ceiling and furniture.

A protein fire is smoke damage resulting from the extreme burn of a protein enriched fibre. Most common protein fires are from burnt food. SERVPRO of Dane County West was recently at one of these types of fire in Monroe, WI. Turkey stock was accidentally left on the range and unfortunately burnt down to a crisp. Thankfully, the fire was contained in the pot on the stove and the home did not suffer a full-blown fire loss. Unfortunately, protein fires leave a caustic smell behind and every surface of their home had to be cleaned and treated.

At first glance, protein fires do not appear to cause any damage to your home and contents. However, the aftermath of a protein fire is an invisible and often sticky, foul smelling residue that coats the many surfaces throughout your home.

SERVPRO of Dane County West has the technology, training and experience to mitigate various types of smoke damage. Our trained technicians use ozone treatments and thermal fogging to mitigate protein odor. An ozone treatment can deodorize, disinfect, and remove smoke particles in an indoor environment. Ozoneis formed in thegeneratorand dispersed in a room where it oxidizes organic smoke and odor particles. A thermal fogger emits a cloud of particles that are similar in composition to smoke then penetrate a structure's cracks, crevices and surface pores neutralizing any smoke particles they come in contact with.

If you have a kitchen fire and/or odor damage from burnt food and smoke damage, SERVPRO of Dane County West is here to help!

Fire Damage Cleanup using Dry Ice Blasting

12/26/2017 (Permalink)

Dry ice blasting uses compressed air to accelerate solid carbon dioxide (CO2) dry ice pellets to clean a variety of surfaces including those from fire

SERVPRO of Dane County West used Dry Ice Blasting to clean up the soot damage from a fire in Monroe, WI.

Dry ice blasting is nonabrasive, nonconductive and nonflammable.

Pretty lights, candles, and decorations are just a few of the items bringing charm and cheer to the holiday seasons—however, if they are not used carefully your holidays may go from festive to frightening.

The American Red Cross says, “Stay safe while you celebrate.”

The American Red Cross offers the following safety tips to help greatly reduce the fire risk in your home or business this holiday season.

  • Place Christmas trees, candles, and other holiday decorations at least three feet away from heat sources like ?replaces, portable heaters, radiators, and heat vents.
  • Make sure that light strings and other holiday decorations are in good condition. Do not use anything with frayed electrical cords and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Always unplug tree and holiday lights before leaving the property or going to bed.
  • Never use lit candles to decorate a tree. Always extinguish candles before leaving the room or going to bed.

The National Safety Council says, “Watch Out for Those Fire-starters.”

The National Fire Protection Association reports 12% of home candle fires occur in December. A higher risk of fire during the holiday season comes with fireplace and candle usage. The National Safety Council and The National Fire Protection Association offers the following tips:

  • Never leave burning candles unattended or sleep in a room with a lit candle
  • Keep candles out of reach of children
  • Make sure candles are on stable surfaces
  • Don't burn candles near trees, curtains or any other flammable items
  • Don't burn trees, wreaths or wrapping paper in the fireplace
  • Check and clean the chimney and fireplace area at least once a year

Your SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals Wish you a safe and happy holiday season!

Kitchen Cautions

Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires. The leading cause? Unattended cooking. It's important to be alert to prevent cooking fires.

Families gather in November for Thanksgiving and spend time preparing a delicious feast, but it you don't practice safe cooking habits, your holiday could become hazardous very quickly. According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve. The leading cause? Unattended cooking.

It's important to be alert to prevent cooking fires.

  • Be on alert!
  • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food.
  • If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
  • Keep anything that catch fire away from the stove top - such as oven mitts, towels, curtains, wooden utensils, food packaging, etc.

If you have a cooking fire, consider the following safety protocols to help keep you and your family safe.

Five Dangers of Deep Frying a Turkey

A deep-fried is turkey delicious, but worth it? if you've seen any of the numerous videos of turkey fryer explosions and fires online, you may have asked yourself this question before. Running the risk of bodily injury or property damage is something to consider when menu planning this holiday season.

  • Turkey fryers can easily tip over, spilling hot cooking oil over a large area.
  • An overfilled cooking pot will cause cooking oil to spill when the turkey is put in, and a partially frozen turkey will cause cooking oil to splatter when put in the pot.
  • Even a small amount of cooking oil spilling on a hot burner can cause a large fire.
  • Without thermostat controls, deep fryers can overheat oil to the point of starting a fire.
  • The sides of the cooking pot, lid, and pot handles can get dangerously hot.
