Fire & Water - Cleanup & Restoration

Water Drip Through Canned Lighting

In many water loss situations, the first signs of a leaking pipe occur when the water makes it way into your home through the ceiling. If you see water pooling or dripping from a light
fixture, as seen in this video, do not attempt to let it out. Water and electrical fixtures make a
dangerous combination.
It is extremely dangerous to use any electrical fixture that is (or has been) in contact with
water. This is because water, and the contaminants within it, acts as a conductor of
electricity, which means it can carry an electrical current to whatever it touches, including
people. If you see water pooling or dripping from a light fixture, even touching the switch to
shut it off can result in electrical shock.
If you see water leaking from a ceiling light fixture, immediately shut off the electricity at the
home's service panel (breaker box). Confirm that the electricity is off by testing other dry electrical sources in the home with a non-contact voltage tester. If the water is coming from
a leaking pipe, turn off the water supply at the home's main shutoff valve. Do not try to fix or turn on the light fixture yourself. Contact professionals to correct the leak and evaluate how
best to repair the light fixture.
Trying to remove the water and repair the damage yourself can further exacerbate the
damage. Allow SERVPRO of Dane County West highly trained Service Technicians to get
the job done right. We are available 24/7 for all your emergency water damage restoration
needs.
