Steps you can take to prevent pipes from freezing & bursting

Did you know frozen pipes are one of the biggest risks of property damage in winter?

According to State Farm, "A 1/8-inch crack in a pipe can spew up to 250 gallons of water a day, causing flooding, serious structural damage, and immediate potential for mold.”

Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house or in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. A frozen pipe can burst where there is ice blockage, but the rupture is typically caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage.

To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take:

  • Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.
  • Keep garage doors closed.
  • Insulate pipes in attic & crawl spaces.
  • Seal leaks that allow cold air inside near where pipes are located.
  • Open kitchen cabinets no let warm air circulate near the plumbing.
  • When the weather is frigid, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.
  • Be sure to completely drain water from the swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.
