7 Tips to Prepare for Winter

servpro logo with title Winter Weather Worries Have Questions About Water Damage, Fire Damage, Smoke Damage, or Soot Damage? Call SERVPRO of Dane County West Today – (608) 497-3331

With temperatures dropping daily here in the Dane County, Madison, WI area, here are some tips to help you prepare for the winter months to come.

  1. Keep cabinet doors open during cold spells. This allows warm air to circulate to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting.
  2. Consider shutting off outdoor faucets to prevent frozen pipes from bursting.  Find the shut-off valve in the basement or crawl space and turn it off.
  3. If you follow the previous step, then open the outdoor faucet to help ensure it drains completely and the inner valve is shut off.
  4. Ensure gutters are clean and secure. Leaves and debris accumulate, causing a damming effect on gutters, leading to roof problems and water damage.
    • Ice dams are a leading culprit for water leaks during the winter season. Ice dams form when heated indoor air melts roof snow. The melted snow collects on unheated eaves and starts freezing, creating ice dams. When heated air melts roof snow above and behind the dammed ice, trapped water cannot safely flow or run off the roof—the ice dam backflows under the roof's shingles and into the structure's interior areas.
  5. Proper maintenance of your furnace can help reduce the risk of furnace malfunctions like puff-backs that cause extensive fire damage.
  6. A puff-back is a messy furnace malfunction that occurs when an oil burner backfires, sending soot throughout your home or business. It can happen all at once, covering an interior in grimy soot, or a puff-back can leak soot particles more gradually.
  7. Puff-backs can also be caused by a partly clogged or cracked nozzle, improper nozzle angle, cracked electrodes, poor adjustment of the air-fuel mixture, a defective spark transformer, shorted ignition cables, or dirty or low-grade fuel.

If winter weather strikes your business or home with water damage or fire damage, let us help strike back! How Do We Detect the Extent of Water Damage to a Property?

11/8/2023 (Permalink)

a SERVPRO® technician using a moisture meter on a wood floor When fire damage and water damage take control of your life, we help you take it back. Call SERVPRO of Dane County West Today (608) 497-3331

Question: How do we detect the extent of water damage from broken water pipes, leaks, bathroom overflows, storm flooding, and the many other causes of water damage in the Madison, WI, area?

Answer: We at SERVPRO of Dane County West use industry-standard scoping tools to detect the moisture levels incurred from water damage. This allows us to effectively dry the affected areas with state-of-the-art drying equipment that includes high-velocity air movers, industrial-stand dehumidifiers, wood-floor drying mats, and air scrubbers with HEPA filtration.

Scoping involves locating the areas of the structure affected by water damage and defining how much the structure and contents have absorbed moisture. Moisture detection devices also verify that an environment has been dried thoroughly.

SERVPRO of Dane County West uses the following equipment:

  • Moisture Sensors detect moisture in carpets, baseboards, and walls.
  • Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate moisture readings that enable SERVPRO of Dane County West to monitor the drying process.
  • Thermo-hygrometers measure both temperature and relative humidity. Capturing these two readings, a SERVPRO of Dane County West Professional using a psychrometric chart can calculate specific humidity, dew point, and vapor pressure.

Once the scoping is completed, and the affected areas are identified, we use Psychrometry to measure and evaluate air conditions to create the proper atmosphere for optimal drying.

Psychometry studies the air and its temperature, humidity, vapor pressure, and dew point properties. They are measured to evaluate air conditions in the structure, enabling SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals to create the proper atmosphere for optimal and efficient drying.

Water can damage materials in two ways: first, absorption through direct contact with water, and second, absorption of moisture from the air. Measuring the moisture content of the air is critical to the drying process.

Once the scoping is completed and the affected areas are identified, SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals establishes an environment favorable for drying. Using psychometry, we understand how to manipulate temperature and humidity with state-of-the-art detection and drying equipment to produce optimum drying conditions.

MOLD Management - A "Typical" Mold Removal Process

When there's a water intrusion in your Dane County, Madison, WI property, like a roof leak, a busted frozen pipe, appliance malfunction, or leaking water line, mold can quickly become a problem in your home or business.

Mold and mildew will develop within 24-48 hours of water exposure and will continue to grow until the source of the moisture is eliminated. Mold can cause health effects and can also cause significant damage to your property. Fortunately, SERVPRO of Dane County West has the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem. Although every mold damage scenario is different, requiring a unique solution, the general mold remediation process stays the same. The following steps illustrate a "typical" mold removal process.

The mold cleanup and restoration process begin when you call SERVPRO. A representative will ask a series of questions to determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel needed.

Inspection and Damage Assessment

Your property will be carefully inspected for mold signs using technology designed to detect mold and hidden water sources. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view.

Here at SERVPRO of Dane County West, we highly recommend that our customers engage Industrial Hygienists/Environmentalists to detect exactly where microbial growth may be found in their homes. This is a partnership we strongly recommend and is mutually beneficial for our customers.

Industrial Hygienists/Environmentalists are specialists who tend to approach indoor mold conditions primarily from a scientific perspective. They are trained to take air samples and surface samples of visually apparent mold and develop a protocol for the remediation process.

Once a customer has a sample analysis completed, SERVPRO of Dane County West completes the detected mold's remediation.

Mold Containment

Various containment procedures will be placed to prevent the spread of mold and isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process.

Air Filtration

Specialized filtration equipment captures microscopic mold spores out of the air. SERVPRO technicians utilize powerful air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums to prevent these mold spores' spread while the mold remediation is in progress.

Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. Anti-fungal and antimicrobial treatments will be used to eliminate mold colonies and help prevent new colonies from forming. Removing and disposing of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and flooring, may be necessary to remediate heavy mold growth.

Cleaning Contents and Belongings

SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals clean restorable items affected by mold. They use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and sanitize your belongings. They are also trained to remove odors and deodorization using fogging equipment.

Restoration

Depending on the mold damage level, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may be removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet. It may entail major repairs such as reconstructing various areas or rooms in a home or business.

SERVPRO of Dane County West is proud to serve the West Dane County, Madison, WI area. These conditions may require a qualified Indoor Air Quality Professional's expertise like an Industrial Hygienist/Environmentalist to inspect the building for mold growth and water damage problems. Air Quality Professionals, also called Industrial Hygienists/Environmentalists, tend to approach indoor mold conditions primarily from a scientific perspective. They are trained to take air samples and surface samples of visually apparent mold and develop a protocol for the remediation process. Once they have the sample analysis completed, the customer calls us, SERVPRO of Dane County West, to mitigate and remove the detected mold.

SERVPRO of Dane County West highly recommends that our customers engage Industrial Hygienists/Environmentalists to detect exactly where microbial growth may be found in their homes. This is a partnership we strongly recommend and is mutually beneficial for our customers.

national preparedness month 2021 three generations of females looking at laptop on couch Have Storm, Flood, or Fire Damage Near You? Call SERVPRO of Dane County West Today (608) 497-3331

The 2021 National Preparedness Theme is "Prepare to Protect. Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love."

National Preparedness Month (NPM) is an observance each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time.

SERVPRO® Industries, Inc. is once again proud to be a member of the National Preparedness Month Coalition and is committed to helping the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in its efforts to promote the importance of preparedness planning.

Here are steps to help you "Prepare to Protect" in an area near you

Make a Plan!

Talk to your friends and family about how you will communicate before, during, and after a disaster. Make sure to update your plan based on the CDC recommendations due to COVID-19.

Step 1: Put a plan together by discussing the questions below with your family, friends, or household to start your emergency plan.

  •  How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?
  • What is my shelter plan?
  • What is my evacuation route?
  • What is my family/household communication plan?
  • Do I need to update my emergency preparedness kit?
  • Check with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to update my emergency plans due to Coronavirus.
    • Get masks (for everyone over 2 years old), disinfectants, and check my sheltering plan.

Step 2:  Consider specific needs in your household

Tailor your plans and supplies to your specific daily living needs and responsibilities as you prepare your plan. Create your own personal network for specific areas where you need assistance. Discuss your needs and responsibilities and how people in the network can assist each other with communication, care of children, business, pets, or specific needs like operating medical equipment. Keep in mind some of these factors when developing your plan:

  • Different ages of members within your household
  • Responsibilities for assisting others
  • Locations frequented
  • Dietary needs
  • Medical needs, including prescriptions and equipment
  • Disabilities or access and functional needs, including devices and equipment
  • Languages spoken
  • Cultural and religious considerations
  • Pets or service animals
  • Households with school-aged children

Step 3: Fill out a Family Emergency Plan

Download and fill out a family emergency plan or use it as a guide to creating your own.

Family Emergency Communication Plan - Ready.Gov

Step 4: Practice your plan with your family/household

Build a Kit. Gather supplies that will last for several days after a disaster for everyone living in your home. Don't forget to consider the uniqueness of each person or pet if you have to evacuate quickly. Update your kits and supplies based on recommendations by the CDC.

Basic Disaster Supplies Kit

To assemble your kit, store items in airtight plastic bags and put your entire disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag.

A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items:

  • Water (one gallon per person per day for several days, for drinking and sanitation)
  • Food (at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food)
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and an NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Extra batteries
  • Whistle (to signal for help)
  • Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place)
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
  • Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
  • Manual can opener (for food)
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery

Additional Emergency Supplies

Since Spring of 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended people include additional items in their kits to help prevent the spread of coronavirus or other viruses and the flu.

Consider adding the following items to your emergency supply kit based on your individual needs:

  • Masks (for everyone ages 2 and above), soap, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes to disinfect surfaces
  • Prescription medications
  • Non-prescription medications such as pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medication, antacids, or laxatives
  • Prescription eyeglasses and contact lens solution
  • Infant formula, bottles, diapers, wipes, and diaper rash cream
  • Pet food and extra water for your pet
  • Cash or traveler's checks
  • Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification, and bank account records saved electronically or in a waterproof, portable container
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
  • Complete change of clothing appropriate for your climate and sturdy shoes
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Matches in a waterproof container
  • Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
  • Mess kits, paper cups, plates, paper towels, and plastic utensils

We at SERVPRO of Dane County West often partner with Industrial Hygienists/Environmentalists for mold mitigation.

An example of one of these jobs was recently completed in Madison, WI. There was visible mold in various areas throughout the basement. The customer initially hired an Industrial Hygienist to test for mold type and severity.

Industrial Hygienists/Environmentalists are specialists who tend to approach indoor mold conditions primarily from a scientific perspective. They are trained to take air samples and surface samples of visually apparent mold and develop a protocol for the remediation process. Once they had the sample analysis completed, the customer called SERVPRO of Dane County West to mitigate and remove the detected mold.

The following steps are involved in the mold removal/mitigation process:

  1. Cleaning all furniture all non-porous furniture in the area and then covering it to protect it from any contamination thereafter.
  2. Removal of all porous material that has been affected by microbial growth.
  3. Setting up containment. We contained this area from the rest of the house and used zippers to gain access to the area.
  4. We then ducted our air filtration devices to the outside to create a negative pressure environment so that any spore contamination would be contained to that area (as seen in the picture). Once all the affected materials were removed, we thoroughly cleaned the area and treated it with an antimicrobial solution to prevent further microbial growth.

Here at SERVPRO of Dane County West, we highly recommend that our customers engage Industrial Hygienists/Environmentalists to detect exactly where microbial growth may be found in their homes. This is a partnership we strongly recommend and is mutually beneficial for our customers.

Any home or commercial property can quickly become infested with mold if a source of water is present. Mold can spread throughout a property in as little as 48 hours.

How do Restoration Companies Qualify for IICRC Certified Firm Status?:

There are several steps that restoration companies must take to qualify for IICRC-Certified status to prove that they are both trustworthy and reliable. Those include:

Proof of insurance

This includes retaining and sharing all documentation that relates to insurance coverage, as necessary. If a customer or IICRC representative requests proof, the business must provide it.

  • An IICRC restoration company must also adhere to a strict set of codes set by the IICRC to maintain its certified status. These are often referred to as ANSI or IICRC standards, and they explicitly set the standard state of care which professionals in the industry should give.

Customer Trust

The rigid standards of the IICRC are developed by the industry’s top professionals and evolve as necessary with new information and technology. IICRC certifications are considered the “gold standard” in the restoration industry. By maintaining consistent standards and expectations, IICRC-certified firms protect all parties involved in a related job. It ensures the professionals doing the work have the proper training and safety knowledge. It also ensures they meet other requirements that protect the business and the customer, such as carrying the proper insurance.

The IICRC standards and codes adhered to by the community of the inspection, cleaning, and restoration professionals have power because they require strict adherence and are constantly updated by professionals working within the industry. These standards keep both professionals and consumers in these industries safe.

MOLD

From the Ordinary

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment. Over 100,000 kinds of fungi exist. Fungi produce some beneficial results. Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing bread, baked goods, and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages. The unique flavor of blue cheese is a result of mold. An edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi, and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold (Penicillin chrysogenum).

Even though some forms of mold can add value to our lives, exposure to some types may present health effects for some people.

The Unhealthy

The intrusion of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusions can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing water leaks, and poor humidity control. When water intrusions are not taken care of right away, the resulting damage can present an increased risk of dangerous exposure in most environments. If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Organic materials found inside buildings, such as wood, paper, drywall, and insulation, provide food sources for mold to flourish. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health threat.

Help Is Here

If you have a mold problem in your home or business, consider the following facts:

  • Significant mold growth can occur in 48-72 hours.
  • Mold may present a higher risk to children, the elderly, and anyone with respiratory problems.
  • A strong, musty odor may indicate hidden mold behind drywall or under carpeting.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Dane County West for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

If you think you might have a mold problem, call SERVPRO of Dane County West #608-497-3331. SERVPRO of Dane County West has the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem.

“Mold Removal” vs. Mold Remediation

Restore vs. Replace - Depending on the Damage, We Aim to Restore vs. Replace

4/22/2021 (Permalink)

a wood cabinet that has had fire damage and in the after picture the fire damage has been cleaned Replacing is Not Always Necessary SERVPRO® of Dane County West use specialized test equipment to determine damage. (608) 497-3331

When disaster strikes, a flurry of emotions hits.

Whether fire, smoke, or water damage, there is a long list of things to stay level-headed about when it comes to getting your home back to normal. After knowing that your family and pets are safe, concerns about property damage follow quickly. Knowing how to get your home back to its preloss condition will come down to a single question: Will I need to restore or replace my belongings? But what is the difference?

Restore by definition; “to bring back to a previous condition or state.”

Replace by definition; “to supply or substitute an equivalent for”

Replacing is Not Always Necessary

SERVPRO® of Dane County West Professionals use specialized test equipment to determine damage. We utilize advanced drying techniques and monitor progress daily to ensure your property is completely dried and cleaned. Depending on the damage, we will always try to restore vs. replace. However, there are exceptions, such as harmful bacteria found in Cat3 water saturation or contaminated soot particles. There are health effects associated with restoring contaminated items like these.

Mitigation Requires Quick Action

The most obvious incentive to choose restoration over replacement is the speed at which the restoration process will be complete. If reconstruction is needed, the timeline for completion gets much longer. A restoration job without reconstruction is often the preferred choice for homeowners eager to get their homes back if the property is deemed restorable.

The cost to restore damaged contents is a fraction of the cost to replace. Depending on the insurance company, they reserve the right to restore damaged contents instead of replacing them. Running up the cost of replacing contents can have a detrimental effect on your rates and coverage for many years to come. However, there are instances when items are deemed non-salvageable due to health and safety reasons. If you want to keep any non-salvageable items, you must discuss that with your insurance adjuster immediately.

Mitigation requires quick action. The faster a SERVPRO® of Dane County West Professional arrives on-site to perform drying and cleaning, the better the results – including lower claim costs. Lower Recovery Costs – The SERVPRO® System Helps Save Money emergency mitigation services help minimize additional property damages.

SERVPRO of Dane County West is proud to serve the West Dane County, Madison, WI area. Are you Going on Vacation? Here are Some Steps that Will Ensure your Home is Safe While You and Your Family are Elsewhere.

3/20/2021 (Permalink)

a tropical beach with ocean in background and palm trees We hope these tips help to protect your home and give you increased peace of mind during your next vacation. www.SERVPROdanecountywest.com

According to a study by AAA, thirty-five percent of Americans plan on taking at least one family vacation every year.

If you plan on traveling for more than a couple of days, then you should make sure your home is adequately protected while you’re away. Here are some steps that will ensure your home is safe while you and your family are elsewhere.

Don’t let people know your home is empty.

  • Suspend mail and newspaper services. You can sign up online to suspend USPS mail service and have your mail delivered to a local post office for up to thirty days. For trips longer than thirty days, you should ask a neighbor or friend to pick up your mail. Contact your newspaper provider and ask them to postpone deliveries temporarily.
  • Arrange for lawn care services while you’re gone to make your home seem less abandoned to strangers.
  • Install exterior lighting or motion detectors to deter burglars.
  • Wait to post vacation pictures on social media. Enjoy the time with your family or friends, and post pictures when you return.

Accident proof your home.

  • Check the batteries in home security devices, including motion detectors, cameras, and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace them if necessary.
  • Shut off the main water supply. Often a homeowner will call us upon returning from vacation because they have learned a broken pipe or malfunctioning leaking appliance has caused water damage. No one wants to come home to a fire or water disaster. ahead
  • Conserve energy. Switch your water heater to vacation mode or turn it off completely. Most water heaters now have a pre-programmed vacation mode. If yours does not, then you should be able to adjust the temperature manually. Set your thermostat to either four degrees above or below your average room temperature.
  • Prevent a power surge by unplugging your electronics or plugging them into a surge protector.
  • If you often lose power during a storm or day of heavy rain, then before you leave for vacation freeze a cup of water, place a penny on top of it, and leave it in your freezer. If the penny is not frozen on top when you return, then this means your house lost power sometime during your trip. Inspect the food inside your refrigerator and freezer. You may need to throw several items away.

We hope these tips help to protect your home and give you increased peace of mind during your next vacation.

Flu Season - Prevention Tips

11/1/2020 (Permalink)

a yellow road caution sign reading "Flu Season Ahead" with stormy clouds in the background The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged people to find ways to live and work without exposing themselves. Call SERVPRO of DCW for COVID-19 cleaning.

Flu Season - Prevention Tips

The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged business owners and homeowners alike to find ways to live and work without exposing themselves or others to this highly contagious virus. Now, the approaching flu season is set to complicate that challenge even further. To help control the threat that the one-two punch of COVID-19 and the seasonal flu presents, we at SERVPRO of Dane County West urges everyone to be extra vigilant about adhering to the CDC cleaning and disinfecting protocols this year.

The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu.

Flu Prevention Tips

1. Avoid close contact.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

2. Stay home when you are sick.

If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. This will help prevent spreading your illness to others.

3. Cover your mouth and nose.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

4. Clean your hands.

Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.

Germs are often spread when a person touches something contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

6. Practice other good health habits.

Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work, or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Grassroots Newswire)

SERVPRO® Cleaning Specialists Offers Tips for Staying Healthy as COVID-19 and Flu Season Converge

The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged business owners and homeowners alike to find ways to live and work without exposing themselves or others to this highly contagious virus. Now, the approaching flu season is set to complicate that challenge even further. To help control the threat that the one-two punch of COVID-19 and the seasonal flu presents, local professional cleaning specialists from SERVPRO of Dane County West urges everyone to be extra vigilant about adhering to the CDC cleaning and disinfecting protocols this year.

Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) believe both COVID-19 and the seasonal flu spread primarily by droplets made when infected people cough, sneeze, or talk. While not as frequent, it is also believed adults and children can contract COVID-19 or the flu by touching a surface or an object that has virus particles on it and then touching their mouth, nose, or eyes. The CDC continues to recommend a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses, but experts also emphasize the importance of cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces daily to help mitigate the potential spread from contaminated surfaces. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.

To limit exposure and control the spread of these double threats, SERVPRO® recommends you wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use a hand sanitizer that is at least 60 percent alcohol, keep your hands away from your face, and wear a mask to protect others. For effective daily, routine cleaning at home or work, SERVPRO® recommends first removing surface grime and dirt with soap and water, then following up with a disinfectant. “It’s easier to feel comfortable about limiting exposure at home where you can control how clean your surroundings are,” said a SERVPRO® Professional. “It’s more difficult out in public; but this year especially, it’s important to be aware of the space you’re in. You need to learn to recognize spaces where cleaning is – or is not – a priority so you can adjust your behavior accordingly.”

For those home and business owners who have specialized cleaning requirements or who simply want the peace of mind that a professional cleaning service can offer in this stressful time, SERVPRO of Dane County West can help. “While we remain a leader in disaster cleanup and remediation situations, we also provide that same ‘deeper level of clean’ for everyday residential and commercial cleaning. Also, SERVPRO® offers it's Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned*’ program, developed for businesses in response to the pandemic. The high level of confidence that a professionally cleaned space provides offers a welcomed reassurance to patrons as the flu season intersects with COVID-19.” SERVPRO® specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup, and repair services, helping to remediate fire, smoke, water, or biohazard damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers.

Open for Business - Ushering in a New Standard of Clean

The global COVID-19 pandemic has changed what it means to be clean. With 89% of consumers concerned about returning to brick and mortar and 40% citing store cleanliness as a top concern*, business owners now need to keep customers and employees safe but must also communicate you care enough to choose the highest standard of cleaning available in America.

As you begin to think about re-opening or you may have already re-opened your business, developing a plan, and implementing it is going to be key. Here are some suggestions:

Communication:

Our environment is continuously changing. It is vital to keep your employees informed as well as your clients and customers.

  • Communicate with workers about actions being taken to prevent COVID-19 exposure through routine meetings, postings, and the company website.
  • Post signage to remind your employees of safe practices for social distancing, hand hygiene, and cough/ sneeze etiquette.
  • Keep your clients and customers informed by using:
    • Signage to indicate that your business is sanitized and disinfected.
    • Use stickers or ropes for traffic directions.
    • Have hand sanitizer available for use.
    • Use Social Media to let them know that you’re open.
    • If possible, have a designated employee available to proactively clean.

Maintain Safe Behavioral Practices:

We have all had to make significant behavioral changes to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Social distancing (specifically, staying 6 feet away from others when you must go into a shared space, this is about 2 arms’ length). This may require you to redesign your floorplan or add screens at your place of business.

Cleaning and Disinfecting:

Routine cleaning and disinfecting are an important part of a safe return to work. Surfaces frequently touched by multiple people, such as door handles, desks, phones, light switches, and faucets, should be cleaned and disinfected frequently. Keeping a supply of PPE, disinfectant, and sanitizers are going to be essential.

We’re Here to Help®:

Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned is a defensive cleaning program that goes beyond janitorial cleaning. This is a proactive viral pathogen cleaning that helps ensure the cleanliness of businesses, restaurants, and public spaces in the communities we all call home.

About Coronavirus

The CDC is responding to an outbreak of a respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus. The virus known as “coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19”) is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person or through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.*

Are you going on Vacation? Here are Some Steps that Will Ensure your Home is Safe While You and Your Family are Elsewhere

Are you Going on Vacation? Here are Some Steps that Will Ensure your Home is Safe While You and Your Family are Elsewhere.

  • Prevent a power surge by unplugging your electronics or plugging the into a surge protector.

Tips for Preparing Your Home for Winter Weather

  • Keep cabinet doors open during cold spells. This allows warm air to circulate around pipes.
  • Consider shutting off outdoor faucets.  Find the shut-off valve in the basement or crawl space and turn it to off.
  • If you follow the previous step, then open the outdoor faucet to help ensure it drains completely and the inner valve is shut off.
  • Ensure gutters are clean and secure. Leaves and debris accumulate, causing a damming effect on gutters, which could lead to roof problems and water damage.
  • Proper maintenance of your furnace can help reduce the risk of furnace malfunctions like puffbacks that cause fire damage.

Local realtor, Mary Browning of Browning Real Estate Group recommends SERVPRO of Dane County West. Thank you Mary from SERVPRO of Dane County West!

We have just received the honor of being recognized by Mary Lockyer Browning, Realtor on her Facebook page’s new series in which she spotlights local businesses. We appreciate Mary’s kind words especially in light of the recent storms that affected western Dane County. September 27 at 2:13 PM ·

I am pleased to announce the start of a new series, in which I will spotlight local businesses that we support and trust! I hope to bring you interesting and useful information, especially when there is a connection to real estate.

Today, I wanted to pass on some information from a dear friend and fellow business owner, Heather McEllistrem. SERVPRO of Dane County West is locally owned and operated by Heather and her husband Jim. Their highly trained team of restoration specialists are experienced in the cleanup and restoration of residential and commercial property after a fire, smoke or water damage. They also hold a General Contractors License, unique from others in this field, so you can be confident in their skills and expertise! SERVPRO has been in overdrive serving those affected by the recent local flooding, and they are available to assist anyone still experiencing water or mold damage. They have also created a blog on their website, keeping the community informed on a variety of issues. Check out their recent posts on extreme flooding and mold, as they are especially helpful to those affected by the flooding!

I also want to add that this flooding will have an impact on local home sales over the next few years. Even if you do not intend to sell your home for some time, I highly recommend that all homeowners document and record any repairs/remediation made during this unfortunate period. Future homebuyers will want to know how this unprecedented event affected your property and what you did to correct any damage. I hope this information was helpful to you and that everyone is having a great day!

Thank you, Browning Real Estate Group! Our SERVPRO of Dane County West Family Sincerely appreciates your endorsement.

Should you need a trusted realtor in the Dane County area, we highly recommend Browning Real Estate Group.

When Fire and Water Take Control of Your Life, We Help You Take it Back!

10/30/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals are available 24-hours a day, 365 days a year to help you regain control quickly. #608-497-3331

After a water or fire loss, SERVPRO of Dane County West's number one goal is returning affected areas and items to their preloss condition, putting property owners back and control and doing all we can to make it “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals use specialized test equipment to determine hidden water. By using advanced drying techniques, SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals monitor and ensure your property is properly dried. Mitigation requires quick action. The faster SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals arrive on-site, the better the results – including lower claim costs.

WHAT IS RESTORABLE

Determining exactly what can be saved until everything is dry is usually impossible. We will set a follow-up date so we can monitor the drying process. In addition, the restoration process will be scheduled when the drying is complete. This can include floor preparation, tack strip replacement, carpet and pad installation, seaming, carpet cleaning and restoring, and furniture and contents cleaning. A scope of services will be provided.

PRE-EXISTING OR PRE-LOSS CONDITIONS

During the course of cleaning, it is likely we will remove day-to-day soiling, which existed prior to your loss. We are happy to do so. If, however, the removal of pre-existing soil requires significant extra effort, our crews will be instructed to move on to the next item. Pre-existing damage, including visible mold growth, will also be noted.

PERSONAL ITEMS

In the course of our survey and cleaning, we will sometimes be required to open doors, cupboards, etc. to qualify and/or restore the damage. If any of these areas contain personal items you would prefer to relocate before we start work, please let us know.

  • Guns and Ammunition

Our crews are instructed NEVER to touch guns or ammunition. For this reason, we request you remove any such items from the areas we are cleaning.

  • Jewelry, Valuables, Heirlooms

Please remove any valuable items from the areas we are cleaning before the job is started. We are not responsible for those items.

OVERLOOKED ITEMS

Although our supervisors inspect all work, you should accompany the supervisor on the final walk-through and bring any overlooked items or concerns to the supervisor’s attention.

INSURANCE ADJUSTERS OR AGENTS

We are neither insurance adjusters nor agents. We cannot authorize anything to be replaced, repaired or painted. Our job is to preserve and protect, stop further damage from occurring and to restore damaged items to their prior condition when possible.

EMERGENCY CHARGES

The exact price of restoring your property following a water damage emergency is virtually impossible to determine on our first visit. However, in order to give you an idea, we will review the SERVPRO® Water Damage Emergency Services Report to provide you an initial estimate while on our first visit if requested. The scope of work can change due to unforeseen circumstances. The final bill will be forwarded to you and/or your insurance carrier upon completion.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Maintaining your personal health and safety is of great concern to us. All occupants and pets should stay away from the work areas to protect their health and safety during the work process. Material Safety Data Sheets for our products are available upon request.

APPROXIMATE COMPLETION

The actual time required to complete the restoration process is difficult to estimate. However, the more quickly technicians begin work to limit the damage, the faster the job can be completed. When water has time to absorb, the drying and restoration process can take longer.

When fire and water take control of your life, we help you take it back. Our goal is to make it…”Like it never even happened.” We are available 24/7/365 for Emergency Services and are Here to Help! SERVPRO of Dane County West #608-497-33311. www.SERVPROdanecountywest.com
