Timeline for Water Damage Near You
The longer water damage sits, the more damage it causes. Every water damage should be treated as an emergency and it’s important to get water damage mitigated immediately. The following timeline shows how fast water damage occurs, and why water damage mitigation needs to happen as possible:
Within Minutes
Water spreads and saturates the property quickly and is absorbed into walls, floors, upholstery and belongings. Porous materials, like paper goods begin to absorb water immediately.
1-2 Hours
Drywall and insulation swells, carpet and upholstery have absorbed water and become heavy and sodden. Metals begin to tarnish.
48 Hours – 1 week
Mold grows; doors and furniture warp; metal begins to rust. Wood floors and wood furnishings also begin to swell, and furniture begins to warp/mold. Mold growth begins in as little as 24 hours after moisture has been present, so now there will be a major concern for mold.
Over 1 week
Water contamination becomes Category 3, with bio-hazardous contaminants that pose serious health effects. Few items are salvageable and structural damage is likely to occur. Mold growth and other harmful bacteria are now major risks.
