Take Precautions in Madison, WI, to Prevent Fire Damage

As temperatures drop in the Madison, Wisconsin area, take precautions so you can prevent serious problems such as smoke and fire damage.

Here are four tips that will help you feel safer when you need to turn up the heat.

  1. Check Your Space Heater

Small space heaters are typically used when the main heating system is inadequate. They can also boost the temperature of rooms used by individuals who are sensitive to cold.

Safety is a top consideration when using space heaters. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that more than 25,000 residential fires every year are associated with the use of space heaters.

When using a space heater, make sure there is at least three feet of clearance around it and that it’s placed on a level surface. Keep children and pets away and always unplug the heater when you are not in the room.

  1. Test All Emergency Detectors

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are typically battery operated and it’s important to check them regularly. These warning devices will alert your family to fire and dangerous smoke if working properly. It’s generally best to replace the batteries in your smoke detectors every time the clocks change—twice a year.

  1. Schedule a Fireplace Inspection

Chimney fires are mainly caused by creosote, a highly flammable residue that builds up in the flue of a fireplace. Buildup inside the chimney can easily cause a fire and lead to smoke damage. Cracks in the chimney liner could also cause carbon monoxide to spread throughout the home. Given that this is an odorless and colorless gas that can be fatal, it’s critical to make sure the fireplace is safe before you start using it. It’s important to sweep chimneys at the beginning of winter to prevent the buildup and ignition of creosote and other debris.

  1. Create a Family Plan

Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year.
