Containment speeds drying water damaged areas

By using a simple containment system as seen in this commercial property in Madison, WI, we can decrease the size of the area we are drying. Containment speeds drying areas that have water damage and lessens costs to our clients and customers.  In this case we had a saturated water damaged floor in one area of a large showroom from a broken water pipe. By using containment we focused the drying to only the affected areas instead of drying the whole showroom.

SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals establish environments favorable for drying

We do this by manipulating temperature and humidity levels with the aid of state of the art monitoring and drying equipment to produce optimum drying conditions.

Psychrometry is the study of the air and its properties. The properties of temperature, humidity, vapor pressure, and dew point are measured to evaluate air conditions in the structure, enabling SERVPRO of Dane County West Professionals to create the proper atmosphere for more efficient drying.

Water can damage materials in two ways: first, by absorption through direct contact with water; and absorption of moisture from the air. Measuring the moisture content of the air is critical to the drying process.

Even small water damages from broken water pipes, overflown sinks, and dishwasher or washing machine malfunctions can cause severe structural and indoor air quality issues over time. The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. SERVPRO of Dane County West has the equipment, training, and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage expense during a fire or water loss.

THE TOOLS WE USE - IICRC Certified Equipment

At SERVPRO of Dane County West, helping our customers and returning water and/or fire-damaged areas and items to their preloss condition is our number one priority.

To do this, SERVPRO of Dane County West understands that using the proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing claims loss expense. When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform. With that in mind, we will take you through a behind-the-scenes look at some of the tools we use to help get your property and structure to its preloss condition. Each machine and piece of equipment has a crucial role in the restoration process. Every SERVPRO of Dane County West Restoration Technicians is trained to use each piece of equipment to its highest potential. Here are a few of our most commonly seen and used machines and their purpose.

PORTABLE EXTRACTORS:

Extractors are used for cleaning carpets, cleaning upholstery, and removing water from floors after a water loss. An extractor has three major components: a heater, a pump, and a vacuum system. Restoration Technicians use this machine for variable heat-controlled cleaning, including to heat the rinse solutions to clean more effectively. The vacuum system and waste recovery tank remove soils and moisture from the surface and collects them in the reservoir. With this machine, we can expedite the removal of water and humidity from damaged materials and textiles to help restore it to preloss conditions. In doing this, the potential of having to replace contents or belongings is lowered.

THE OZONE GENERATOR:

The portable ozone generator eliminates various odors caused by animals, cigarette smoke, mold and mildew, fire, and water damage. This machine generates "ozone," which consists of unstable oxygen molecules (containing three oxygen atoms). Ozone chemically reacts with odor-causing molecules to oxidize residues and remove the odors. When using this piece of equipment, we follow the necessary guidelines. People and pets need to evacuate from the environment during the ozone process for health and safety reasons. Once the deodorization process is complete, ozone quickly reverts to the typical oxygen molecule, leaving no residues. Once the odor is gone, the results are permanent. One of the ozone generator features is that it is made to be compact and portable, yet also be a durable and professional unit.

WEARING AND FIT CHECKING OUR RESPIRATORS:

Safety for not only our Technicians but also our customers is a priority at SERVPRO. We enforce that respirators must be worn during all times by our technicians during exposure to hazardous situations. Additionally, our crews wear their respirators to be safe. If we are using respirators, we inform customers in the general area of this and advise them of the necessary precautions associated with the work going on for their safety.

DEHUMIDIFICATION EQUIPMENT:

The dehumidification process increases the rate of evaporation by removing water vapor from the air. Our Restoration Technicians position dehumidifiers strategically in a water-damaged structure, so the moist, humid air moves through the unit while dry, warm air is discharged. Did you know that dry air acts like a sponge to absorb moisture from wet materials? Since it does, we use the dehumidifiers, primarily because it provides a continual dry air source to enhance the restoration process. We use small commercial refrigerant-dehumidifiers because it removes approximately 8 gallons of water per day from the atmosphere. An extra-large industrial refrigerant could remove as much as 20 gallons per day.

AIR MOVING EQUIPMENT:

Air movers are used in water damage restoration to enhance evaporation at the surface level and reduce drying time. These machines introduce airflow at the surface level and replace the highly saturated air with drier air to enhance dissipation. Our crew is required to complete the "science of drying" coursework. This coursework teaches them how many air movers they will need and how to position them to create airflow across all wet surfaces. In some cases, when the lower portion of multiple walls is saturated, many air movers are placed to create a vortex of circular airflow around the walls. Our technicians operate the air movers in several different positions, offering flexibility in directing the airflow with the best possible outcome.

TRUCK MOUNT EXTRACTOR:

A truck-mounted extraction unit consists of several smaller components, which work together to make one of the best pieces of cleaning equipment in the industry. The pieces are made up of the engine, the vacuum, the chemical pump, the water pump, and the heating system. The heated chemical pumping system, along with the vacuum extraction tool, removes various soils and pressurizes the water used for cleaning. Due to the required training of this equipment, our technicians know the specific environment needed for this piece of machinery to work and how to maintain it appropriately for health and safety reasons.

The SERVPRO® Equipment Department tests all equipment, including the truck mount, before putting the items in the product line. To provide the best service to our customers, we must know how the truck mount works, how to set up and maintain the unit, how to use it safely, how to clean the vehicle interior, unit, tools, hoses, and so forth as needed, and how to inspect all equipment and accessories for any damage, leaks, or wear.

We use many other devices and accessories, but for today's behind-the-scenes look, these are some of our most commonly used pieces of equipment. The use of these devices helps us get your water or fire disaster back to its preloss condition. SERVPRO of Dane County West is always here to help!

There are Three Types/Categories of Water

The water restoration Process varies according to the type of water loss.

  1. Clean water, as referred to as Category 1 water, is water from a broken pipe or other water sources inside the property; rainwater is also considered clean. The term gray water is used to classify slightly contaminated water.
  2. Clean water becomes gray water when it is left untreated allowing bacteria and other contaminants to begin growing, making the water hazardous. Gray water is referred to as Category 2 water in the water restoration industry.
  3. Blackwater, also referred to as Category 3 water, is highly contaminated and filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals, and more. Blackwater is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding, or any type of natural disaster. Blackwater/Category 3 water and should always be handled by trained professionals.

When you have water damage, don't leave your property to chance. Call SERVPRO® of Dane County West. Consider taking the following precautions to help minimize damage or prevent further damage while waiting for help to arrive:

Water Damage Tips - What to Do

  • Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.
  • Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building if access to the power distribution panel is safe from potential electrical shock. Do not enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting. Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.

“Disasters Don’t Wait. Make Your Plan Today.” - The 2020 National Preparedness Month Theme

September is National Preparedness Month, an annual awareness event sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This is a great time for business owners to review their emergency preparedness and business continuity plans.

Are You Ready?

As many as 50% of businesses close down following a disaster, according to the latest research. Of the businesses that survive, the overwhelming majority of them had a preparedness plan in place. Pre-planning can serve as an insurance policy aimed at peace of mind. And knowing you are "Ready for whatever happens" speaks trust to your clients and employees that in the event your business is affected by a disaster, they don't necessarily have to be.

It is important to prepare long before a disaster occurs. Consider the following steps to help you better prepare for a water or fire emergency situation.

  • Sign up for local alerts and warnings, download apps, and check access to wireless emergency alerts.
  • Develop and test emergency communication plans.
  • Assemble and/or update emergency supplies.
  • Collect and safeguard critical documents.
  • Document property and assets, and obtain appropriate insurance.

Whether it’s a flood, fire, or extreme winter weather, we must work together as a team to help ensure our families, businesses, places of worship, and neighborhoods are prepared.  Contact SERVPRO of Dane County West to find out how we can help make it “Like it never even happened,” if disaster strikes your life.

When Disaster Strikes, the Key to Business Continuity is having a Readiness Plan in Place.

We Can Help!

SERVPRO® Industries, LLC has developed the Emergency READY Program to help business owners create an Emergency READY Profile (ERP) for their facility, at no charge. The business owner works with SERVPRO of Dane County West to gather and document information that will become critical if a disaster strikes. Once the ERP is created, business owners have access to their information 24/7 online and by using SERVPRO’s free smartphone app.

An ERP assessment of your facility contains only the critical information needed in the event of an emergency and provides facility details such as shut-off valve locations, priority areas, and priority contact information.

A SERVPRO of Dane County West Representative will come to your facility to take pictures of critical areas such as exits, stairwells, elevators, electrical room, alarm location, and water shut-off areas so they are incorporated in the ERP accessible on the smartphone app and/or a printed out document. They will also identify and tag water shut-off valves, priority areas, and priority contact information. In addition, they will also identify the line of command for authorizing work to begin and who to call in the event of an emergency.

Whether you are away for lunch, on vacation or it’s after hours, wouldn’t it be nice to have access to your vital building data and emergency contact information directly from your smartphone, 24/7/365? Now you can with the FREE SERVPRO Emergency READY Profile!

The SERVPRO Emergency READY Profile Advantage:

  • A no-cost assessment of your facility.
  • A concise Profile Document that contains only the critical information needed in the event of an emergency.
  • A guide to help you get back into your building following a disaster.
  • Identification of the line of command for authorizing work to begin.
  • Provides facility details such as shut-off valve locations, priority areas, and priority contact information.
